The Brighton Capoeira Angola Group
Filhos de Angola
The Filhos de Angola capoeira group was formed in 1981 by Laercio and Roberval. They had learnt their Capoeira from the Capoeiristas of Cosme de Ferias, the neighbourhood they lived, growing up around the Rodas of Mestres Caicara aand Mestre Canjiquinha. Later they trained with the likes of Mestre Joao Grande, Mestre Joao Pequeno, Mestre Moraes and Mestre Cobra Mansa.
The group was founded to maintain the roots of Capoeira Angola, to teach the fundaments of the art to local children, and subsequently to teach the art in Europe.
Today the group "Filhos de Angola" is a phenomenon. With core groups in Berlin, Stockholm, Barcelona, Valencia, Bristol and Brighton, the group now includes groups from France, Italy even Russia.
Each group is led by an experienced Capoeirista trained by the Mestres. As a group we are dedicated to keeping the rich traditions of Capoeira alive, the music, the ritual, the art, mandinga e manha.
Players come together each year to take part in the International Meeting every July.
The Brighton Group
We’ve been training together, playing Capoeira, putting on events, projects, peormances, kids classes, workshops with Masters, for the last 10 years. We’ve regularly put on workshops and performances for festivals and events, like WOMAD, the Big Green Gathering and Streets of Brighton.
Of all the groups in the UK, this is the one where Capoeira Masters, angoleiros, know they can come share their art, have a game of Capoeira Angola. We’ve been holding it down, keeping it together and keeping Angola Live in the UK.
We’ve got a vibrant group, including men, women and kids, and we always welcome new people.
If you want to see real Capoeira, proper roots style Capoeira, come and check one of our events.
