Capoeira Angola

Movements of defence and attack, low animal-like movements close to the floor, acrobatic leaps, lethal kicks and sweeps, all these combine in the stylish, skilful interplay of the Angola game.

We train the traditional rhythms on berimbau and other instruments and the call and response songs which give the game its impulse and inspiration.

These skills come together in the "Roda", the circle of Capoeira, where each player gets the chance to play her game, pitting his wits against his "camarada".

Capoeira Angola is more than a display of physical ability. Angola is communication, character, cunning, humility, humour; as well as musical and martial skill.

Capoeira Angola is a vibrant and evolving traditional culture- around the world, as in the cities of Brazil. It is "resistencia": resistance to imported Western lifestyle (empty materialist living, whether with or without, our common inheritance from centuries of exploration and exploitation, slavery, colonialism, rape and pillage of peoples, lands, resources etc)

Capoeira creates small communites of heart and soul, healthy places where art, culture, music keeps people together, strong, happy.

It owes its power to the experience of African peoples, surviving oppression, keeping the spirit strong through music, dance, celebration.
